  10.  AB    OBJECTIVES: We established a sensitive ELISA method (ABC-ELISA) to
  11.        detect the antibodies against herpes simplex virus (HSV) in saliva, and
  12.        observed the prevalence among female bath-house workers. MATERIALS &
  13.        METHODS: Paired specimens of serum and saliva were collected from 138
  14.        healthy nurse students. Salivary specimens were collected from 191
  15.        female bath-house workers. After centrifugation, clear saliva were
  16.        collected and stored at 40 degrees C until testing. Serum and saliva
  17.        were tested with ABC-ELISA method by using kits of avidin-biotin complex
  18.        (VECTASTAIN) for detection of antibodies to HSV. RESULTS & DISCUSSION:
  19.        All saliva specimens from bath-house workers were negative in ELISA test
  20.        (ELAVIA MIXT) for anti-HIV. But, the prevalence of HSV antibody in
  21.        saliva among this population was 84.3% (161/191). The positive rates of
  22.        HSV antibody by age were 65% in the 20-29 age group, 89% in the 30-39
  23.        age group and 94% in the > or = 40 age group. The prevalence of HSV
  24.        antibody in saliva among the youngest bath-house worker group was
  25.        significantly higher than that of nurse students (43.5%). Collection of
  26.        blood specimens in epidemiological surveillance is not easy. Though it
  27.        is necessary to improve sensitivity of ABC-ELISA method for testing of
  28.        saliva, the mentioned results suggested that saliva was useful for
  29.        detection of antibodies to HSV in epidemiological studies.
